Video bench / browser first

Video tools.

Convert, sample, and inspect video and audio without an upload. Every one of these decodes the file in your own browser, so nothing is sent to a server.

How browser video processing works

These tools run in your browser, so a video is never uploaded. The trade-off is speed: the browser encodes a clip as it plays it, so compressing or resizing a two-minute video takes about two minutes, and the tab needs to stay open and in front. The output is MP4 where the browser can record it (recent Chrome, Edge, and Safari) and WebM otherwise.

Making a video smaller

Lowering the resolution saves more than lowering the quality: halving the height removes about three quarters of the pixels. A 1080p screen recording shared at 720p is usually still perfectly legible. Every re-encode loses a little detail, so start from the original file rather than from something already compressed — if the result comes out larger, the source was compressed harder than the setting you chose.

If only part of a clip matters, trim it first; if the sound does not, mute it. Both reduce the file before any compression.

GIFs, frames, and audio

A GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and stores every frame in full, so a few seconds of video can make a file of several megabytes. Video to GIF works best for short loops at a small width and a low frame rate — 480 pixels at 10–12 frames per second is a good start. For a single still, the frame extractor or video screenshot keeps full colour.

Video to audio lifts the soundtrack out of a clip; audio trimmer and audio joiner then cut or combine it.

Recording without installing anything

The screen recorder captures a tab, a window, or the whole screen; the camera recorder and voice recorder use your webcam and microphone. The browser asks for permission each time, nothing is sent anywhere, and the recording downloads as a file when you stop.
