Noise profiling
Audacity noise-reduction guidance explains why a representative noise-only profile and modest reduction settings matter: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/noise_reduction.html . The threshold here uses noise mean plus sensitivity times standard deviation for each frequency band.
Spectral analysis
Audio is analysed in overlapping short sections, adjusted by frequency, then blended back together. Mathematical reference: https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/generated/scipy.signal.stft.html . Zero reduction retains the original signal. WAV input keeps its original sample rate; the output rate is shown beside the download.

What should I select for the profile?
Select a short region containing just the unwanted background sound. Speech or music in the profile may also be reduced.
Is the quietest region always the right one?
No. It is a starting point. Listen and select a representative region if the recording contains silence or the noise changes.
Can this remove another person speaking?
No. Spectral gating is suited to steady background noise, not voice or music separation. Reduce the strength if speech loses clarity.
