Video Frame Extractor

Pull still frames out of a video as PNG images and download them together as a zip.

Video Frame Extractor: TOEA spreads the requested number of frames evenly across the range you choose, paints each one to a canvas, encodes it as a PNG, and packs the set into a zip named by frame number and timestamp. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Frame size and full-resolution stills

Frames are scaled to the width you pick, from 240 to 800 pixels, which suits previews, storyboards, and reference sets. For a single frame at the video's full resolution, such as a thumbnail from 4K footage, use video screenshot instead. To see the frames laid out together in one image rather than as separate files, use the contact sheet.

Working out the spacing

The gap between frames is the length of the range divided by the number of frames. Twelve frames across a one-minute clip gives one every five seconds; the same twelve across a ten-second range gives nearly one a second. For a storyboard of a long video, one frame every 10–30 seconds is often enough to show each shot; to study a movement, set a range of a few seconds and take 24 or more.

Up to 60 frames can be taken at once. For more, run the tool again on the next part of the video.

How to use it

  1. Choose a video file.
  2. Pick how many frames to take and how wide they should be.
  3. Extract and download the zip.

Privacy & limitations

The video is read straight from your device and never uploaded. Everything — decoding, resizing, and encoding — happens in this browser tab, so large files are limited by your own memory rather than an upload queue. Frames are re-encoded from the decoded picture, so they carry no metadata from the source file.

Frequently asked questions

How are the frames chosen?

They are spaced evenly across the range you set, each taken at the midpoint of its interval so the first frame is not the black or blank frame many videos open on.

What are the files named?

Each PNG is numbered in order and tagged with its timestamp, so frame 7 at 3.25 seconds becomes something like clip-007-3.25s.png.

Can I grab one exact frame?

Set the start and end a fraction of a second apart and ask for 4 frames; they will all sit within that window.

Why is the frame slightly off from what I scrubbed to?

Seeking lands on the nearest decodable frame, which for heavily compressed video can be a keyframe a little before the time you asked for.
