Resize Video for Social

Refit a video to 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, or 16:9 for Shorts, Reels, TikTok, and feeds — by cropping or by adding bars.

Resize Video for Social: TOEA takes the largest centred rectangle matching your target ratio and redraws it at even dimensions, or fits the whole frame inside the target and fills the remainder with a colour you choose. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

What resolution to expect

Cropping never enlarges, so the output takes the resolution of the part that is kept. A 1920 × 1080 landscape clip cropped to 9:16 becomes 608 × 1080, because only the centre third of the width remains; the platform then stretches it to fill a phone screen and it looks soft. Padding the same clip gives a full 1080 × 1920 frame with the picture across the middle.

Footage meant for vertical platforms is sharpest when it is shot vertically; cropping from landscape works best for 1:1 and 4:5, which keep more of the frame.

Leaving room for the app's buttons

On Reels, Shorts, and TikTok, the caption, account name, and buttons sit over the bottom and right-hand side of the video. Keep faces, text, and anything the viewer must read in the upper and central part of the frame. When padding a landscape clip, the bars above and below are space for a title in an editor, and a bar colour close to the footage's own tones looks less like a letterbox than black.

How to use it

  1. Choose a video file.
  2. Pick the aspect ratio and whether to crop or pad.
  3. Resize and download the result.

Privacy & limitations

The video is read straight from your device and never uploaded. Everything — decoding, resizing, and encoding — happens in this browser tab, so large files are limited by your own memory rather than an upload queue. Encoding runs at playback speed because the browser records the video as it plays, so a two-minute clip takes about two minutes and the tab must stay in front. Cropping discards the edges of the frame permanently, so keep your original.

Frequently asked questions

Crop or pad — which should I use?

Crop fills the screen and looks native, but loses the sides of a landscape clip. Pad keeps every pixel and adds bars, which suits screen recordings and anything with text near the edges.

Which ratio does each platform want?

9:16 for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok; 1:1 for square feed posts; 4:5 for portrait feed posts, which occupies the most screen without being cropped; 16:9 for ordinary landscape.

Can I choose what the crop keeps?

Not yet — the crop is always centred. For off-centre subjects, crop first with a dedicated editor and then resize here.

Why is the output capped at 1920 tall?

A 9:16 crop from a 4K source would otherwise produce an enormous canvas that encodes slowly for no visible gain on a phone.
