8D Audio Converter
Turn any song into 8D audio that circles around your head, with adjustable speed and a touch of reverb, processed in your browser and saved as MP3 or WAV.
8D Audio Converter: 8D audio moves the music around the listener. The converter places the sound on a circle around your head and moves it continuously, using head-related transfer functions (HRTF), the filtering that the shape of the head and ears applies to sounds from each direction. A light reverb adds a sense of space. It only works on headphones. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, or FLAC · up to 20 minutes, nothing uploaded
Listen with headphones: the 8D effect uses head-related transfer functions, which only work when each ear hears its own channel.
Your file is processed in your browser and never uploaded. Changing the speed changes the pitch too, as in slowed and sped-up edits. MP3 files are encoded with LAME, free software under the LGPL, loaded as a separate file; its source is at lame.sourceforge.io. Only edit music you have the right to use.
How the brain places sounds
We locate sounds from small differences between the ears: a sound from the left reaches the left ear slightly sooner and louder, and the head, outer ear, and shoulders change its tone depending on direction. Head-related transfer functions are measurements of those changes. Applying them as the sound moves tricks the brain into hearing it travel around the head.
Because everyone's ears differ, generic HRTFs work better for some listeners than others, and sounds in front can sometimes seem to come from behind.

To combine 8D with slowing, echo, or lo-fi warmth, use the audio effects studio; for the slowed sound alone, the slowed + reverb generator.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I need headphones?
The effect depends on each ear hearing its own channel, with the tiny timing and tone differences HRTF adds. Through speakers both ears hear both channels and the movement mostly disappears.
What does 8D actually mean?
Nothing technical; it is a nickname for audio that pans around the head with reverb, popular since around 2018. The sound moves in a horizontal circle, not in eight dimensions.
How fast should it rotate?
Six to ten seconds per turn is typical. Faster rotation is more obvious but can be tiring to listen to.
Can I post my 8D version?
Only with the rights to the original song; panning and reverb do not change who owns the recording.
