Cyrillic Transliteration

Convert Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian and Serbian Cyrillic to Latin with a selected standard; reverse ISO 9 text.

Cyrillic Transliteration: Choose a language and an applicable standard. ISO 9 retains separate letters with diacritics. BGN/PCGN uses its current language-specific systems, including the national Ukrainian and Bulgarian systems. Russian passport mode uses ICAO-based letter forms. Reverse accepts ISO 9 spellings for the chosen alphabet. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

ISO 9 uses diacritics and preserves individual letters. Reverse expects Latin text in ISO 9, not ordinary words or mixed Latin and Cyrillic. Other standards merge letters or omit signs, so their results cannot be reversed reliably. BGN/PCGN uses the national systems for Ukrainian and Bulgarian and Serbian Latin spelling. This tool does not certify passport spellings.

Standards

ISO 9:1995 catalogue: https://www.iso.org/standard/3589.html . BGN/PCGN language tables: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/romanization-systems . Russian uses the 1947 system, Belarusian 1979, Serbian 2005 agreement, Ukrainian 2019 agreement and Bulgarian 2013 agreement.

National and travel-document systems

Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers resolution No. 55 of 27 January 2010: https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/55-2010-%D0%BF . National systems include context-dependent Ukrainian vowels and the Bulgarian final ia and Bulgaria exceptions. Only the alphabet selected by the user is converted.

Frequently asked questions

Why do standards give different results?

Some preserve letters with diacritics, while others use Latin digraphs or omit signs. Choose the standard required by your document. This is transliteration, not translation.

Can every result be reversed?

Reverse is provided for ISO 9 because individual letters remain distinct. It expects ISO 9 text in a single alphabet; ordinary Latin words and mixed Latin/Cyrillic text do not reliably round-trip. Other systems merge letters or delete signs.

Why are Ukrainian National and BGN/PCGN alike?

BGN/PCGN adopted the Ukrainian national 2010 system in 2019. It distinguishes the sequence z plus h from the single zh sound. Bulgarian BGN/PCGN likewise follows its official system.

Does passport mode guarantee an accepted name?

It supplies Russian ICAO-based letter spellings. An issuing authority may permit established name spellings or other exceptions; use the spelling on your document when completing an official form.
