Use the distance between consecutive footfalls. A full two-step stride is twice this length. For a better estimate, divide a measured walking distance by the number of steps.

Active energy above rest285 kcal87 minutes at this pace

Height-based step lengths use approximate factors of 0.413 for women and 0.415 for men. Gait and terrain change the result. Step-length model Energy uses MET × kg × hours, with walking values from the 2024 Adult Compendium. This is a population estimate, not a measurement. Compendium of Physical Activities

Step length and distance

The height model uses 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men, as described in the cited pedestrian-navigation study. This is an approximate one-step distance, not the two-step gait definition of stride. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4721747/

Distance in kilometres = steps × step length in centimetres / 100,000. One mile is 1.609344 km. Measured step length is preferable when gait differs from the height estimate.

Walking energy

2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities: code 17152 is 2.8 MET at 2.0–2.4 mph; 17190 is 3.8 MET at 2.8–3.4 mph; 17200 is 4.8 MET at 3.5–3.9 mph on firm, level ground. The pace choices use representative speeds of 2.2, 3.0 and 3.7 mph. https://pacompendium.com/walking/

Duration is distance divided by walking speed. Gross kcal ≈ MET × kg × hours; active kcal ≈ (MET − 1) × kg × hours. These population estimates do not account for every individual, incline, load or surface.

How to use it

  1. Enter steps and estimate or measure the length of one step.
  2. Enter weight and choose a level-ground walking pace.
  3. Read the implied duration, gross calories and active calories.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pace matter?

Pace determines both the time taken over the estimated distance and the activity intensity in METs. These are representative level-ground speeds, not a model for hills.

What is the difference between gross and active calories?

Gross includes the energy used at rest during the walk. Active subtracts a resting 1 MET, so do not add gross calories to a daily estimate that already counts resting energy for that time.
