Marathon Pace Chart: Splits and Printable Pace Band
Turn a marathon target time into cumulative and individual splits, compare the two halves, and print a wrist strip with 5 km checkpoints and the finish.
Marathon Pace Chart: Splits and Printable Pace Band: Divides a 42.195 km marathon into two equal-distance halves. A negative split of 2% means the second half takes 2% less time than the first. Pace is constant within each half, with a change at halfway; the total remains your target time. The table includes the final partial segment. Even pace
Print at 100% on A4 or Letter, turn off headers and footers, then cut around the 190 × 25 mm strip. You can choose Save as PDF in your browser's print dialogue.
Negative split means the second half takes the chosen percentage less time than the first half. Each half uses a constant pace; the finish remains at your target time. The final row is a partial kilometre or mile.
Marathon distance
World Athletics specifies the marathon as 42.195 km. World Athletics Competition and Technical Rules, Technical Rule 55: https://worldathletics.org/about-iaaf/documents/book-of-rules. The rule gives the official distance.
Pacing calculation
For a chosen fractional reduction r, first-half time = total time ÷ (2 − r); second-half time = total − first-half time. This is a user-defined pacing schedule. Compare general pace with the pace calculator or race estimates with the race time predictor.
How to use it
- Enter your target time and choose even pacing or a negative split.
- Choose kilometre, mile or 5 km splits and read the elapsed times.
- Print the pace band at 100%, or use your browser's Save as PDF option.

Frequently asked questions
What does the negative split percentage mean?
It is a reduction in second-half time relative to first-half time. With 10% and a 4:13:20 target, the first half takes 2:13:20 and the second takes 2:00:00.
How do I choose a target?
Use a recent race and the race time predictor, then allow for your training, course and conditions. The chart schedules a target; it does not assess whether you can run it.
Can I save a PDF?
The Print pace band button opens the browser's print dialogue for the strip alone. Choose Save as PDF where supported. Print at 100% with headers and footers disabled, then cut the 190 × 25 mm strip.
Why is the last split shorter?
A marathon is 42.195 km, about 26.219 miles, so the finish comes after the final complete kilometre or mile.
