Pace Calculator

Calculate time per distance unit and average speed from distance and duration.

Pace Calculator: Convert a distance and an elapsed duration into time per distance unit and average speed. Use kilometres or miles consistently to describe a run, walk or ride; a smaller pace value means less time needed for each unit of distance. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. This is a simple planning estimate. Enter monetary values in one currency; no exchange-rate conversion is performed.
  2. Calculations run locally in your browser and do not account for jurisdiction-specific taxes, fees, benefits, or contract terms unless you enter them.

Formula and worked example

Pace = minutes ÷ distance; speed = distance ÷ (minutes ÷ 60)

Time per distance and distance per time

Pace = duration in minutes ÷ distance. Average speed per hour = distance ÷ (duration in minutes ÷ 60). For 5 km in 45 minutes, pace is 45 ÷ 5 = 9 minutes per kilometre; speed is 5 ÷ 0.75 ≈ 6.67 km/h. Entering 5 miles instead produces the same numeric outputs in minutes per mile and miles per hour.

OpenStax introduces speed as a distance-per-time unit rate (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra/pages/5-6-ratios-and-rate). Pace reverses that ratio. For a pace p in minutes per kilometre, speed in km/h is 60 ÷ p; the relationship is reciprocal, so a linear change in pace is not a linear change in speed.

Combining sections of an activity

For an overall pace, add the section times and distances, then divide total minutes by total distance. Averaging displayed paces gives the right result only with suitable distance weighting. A short slow section and a long fast section should not count equally simply because each has one recorded pace.

This average does not show changes within the activity or predict a sustainable race pace. Both distance and duration must be positive; a zero value has no usable reciprocal pace-speed relationship here. Keep the distance unit unchanged across all sections because the widget has no automatic miles-to-kilometres conversion.

How to use it

  1. Enter values using the units and assumptions shown beside each field.
  2. Calculate the fixed formula locally in your browser.
  3. Review the estimate and copy the result when useful.

Frequently asked questions

Does a decimal pace such as 5.5 mean 5 minutes 50 seconds?

No. The output is decimal minutes per distance unit. Multiply the fractional minute by 60: 0.5 × 60 = 30 seconds, so 5.5 means 5 minutes 30 seconds. It is not a minutes-and-seconds clock display.

How do I enter a duration with hours and seconds?

Convert it to decimal minutes: hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60. One hour, two minutes and thirty seconds is 62.5 minutes. The duration field does not parse a time string such as 1:02:30.

Should I use moving time or elapsed time?

Either can be useful, but they describe different averages when there are stops. Elapsed time includes pauses; moving time excludes the pauses your recording system removes. The calculator does not detect stops, so label the input convention when comparing activities.
