Chinese to Pinyin Converter (汉字转拼音)

Turn Chinese characters into pinyin with tone marks, tone numbers, or none, into first letters, or into Zhuyin (注音) for Taiwan, reading each character from the words around it.

Chinese to Pinyin Converter (汉字转拼音): Pinyin comes from the open-source pinyin-pro dictionary, which reads characters with more than one pronunciation from their neighbours (银行 yín háng, 行长 háng zhǎng). 一 and 不 keep their dictionary tones, as standard pinyin spelling does, and a few common words the dictionary misreads are corrected. Zhuyin is converted from the pinyin and agreed with the pypinyin library on all of its standard syllables. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Characters with more than one reading are read from the words around them (银行 háng, 行长 zhǎng), using the open-source pinyin-pro dictionary; check names and rare words. 一 and 不 keep their dictionary tones (yī, bù), as standard pinyin spelling does, rather than the tones they change to in speech. Zhuyin, used in Taiwan, puts the neutral-tone dot first (˙ㄉㄜ).

Tone marks and numbers

Pinyin has four tones and a neutral one: mā, má, mǎ, mà, and ma, written ma1 to ma4 and ma5 with numbers. Tone marks go on the main vowel, in the order a, o, e, then the second of i and u (guǐ, liù).

To convert the characters themselves, use the Simplified and Traditional converter; for Japanese, the kana converter.

Characters with several readings

About one character in ten in everyday text can be read more than one way: 行 is háng in 银行 (bank) and xíng in 行走 (walk), 长 is cháng in 长度 (length) and zhǎng in 行长 (bank president). The converter decides from the words around each character.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is it?

On the site's own Chinese copy, about 99 in 100 characters matched the pypinyin library; the rest are mostly words the two read differently. Check names, place names, and classical text.

Why does 一 not change tone?

In speech 一 and 不 change tone before other syllables (一个 yí gè), but pinyin is normally written with the dictionary tone (yī gè), as here.

What is Zhuyin?

Zhuyin (注音符號, or Bopomofo) is the phonetic script Taiwan uses to teach reading and to type Chinese; ㄓㄨㄥ is zhōng.
