Chinese Word Counter (中文字数统计)
Count the 字数 of Chinese text the way word processors do, with Chinese characters, punctuation, English words, and numbers shown separately, for essays and submissions.
Chinese Word Counter (中文字数统计): Chinese is counted by characters, not words: each Chinese character and each Chinese punctuation mark counts as one, and so does each English word or number, which is how word processors report 字数 for Chinese text. The tool also shows characters with and without spaces, and paragraphs. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

字数 counts each Chinese character and each Chinese punctuation mark as one, and each English word or number as one, the way word processors count Chinese text; essay and submission limits usually mean this figure. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.
A worked example
我们在2026年写了3篇文章,共1,200字! has 11 Chinese characters, 2 Chinese punctuation marks, and 3 numbers, so its 字数 is 16.
For English text, use the word counter; for character limits on social media, the character counter.
Essay and submission limits
When a school, magazine, or competition sets a limit such as 800 字, it almost always means this word processor count, punctuation included. A limit in Chinese characters only (汉字) leaves out the punctuation; the tool shows both.
How to use it
- Paste or type the text.
- Read the word count (字数) and the counts behind it.
- Edit and watch the count update.
Privacy & limitations
The text is counted in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Do punctuation marks count?
In 字数, yes: each full-width mark such as ,。? counts as one. The Chinese characters figure leaves them out, for limits that count characters only.
How are English words and numbers counted?
Each English word, and each number however many digits it has, counts as one, so 2026年 is two.
Why is the count different from my word processor?
Programs differ in how they count spaces, symbols, and half-width punctuation; for a strict limit, use the figure the publisher names.
