Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers exactly, with the answer in its simplest form, as a mixed number, and as a decimal with repeating digits marked.
Fraction Calculator: Every number is kept as an exact fraction of whole numbers, however large, so no step is ever rounded: 1/3 + 1/6 comes out exactly 1/2. Decimals you type are read exactly too, so 0.75 is 3/4. The decimal answer marks the repeating digits in brackets, as in 0.(3) for 1/3. Write fractions with a slash and mixed numbers with a space, such as 2 1/4. Every step is exact: results are always reduced to the simplest form.
How exact arithmetic works
Each number is kept as a pair of whole numbers, a numerator and a denominator, of any size. Adding uses a common denominator, multiplying multiplies across, and dividing multiplies by the reciprocal; after each step the fraction is reduced by the greatest common divisor of its two parts, so the answer is always in simplest form.
Decimals are converted exactly as written, so 0.125 becomes 1/8, and the decimal answer is expanded digit by digit until it ends or repeats; the repeating block is shown in brackets, as in 5/6 = 0.8(3).
Writing calculations
Use a slash for each fraction and a space to join a whole number to a fraction, as in 3 1/2. Brackets group longer expressions, and ^ raises a fraction to a whole-number power, as in (2/3)^3 = 8/27. Percentages are read as hundredths, so 50% is 1/2.
For practice sheets with answer keys, the math worksheet generator prints arithmetic problems; for roots and decimals, the scientific calculator.
How to use it
- Type the calculation, such as 1/2 + 1/3 or 2 1/4 − 1 2/3.
- Read the answer in simplest form, as a mixed number, and as a decimal.
- Use brackets for longer calculations and ^ for whole-number powers.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions?
Give them a common denominator, add the numerators, and simplify: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator does this exactly for any number of fractions.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 2.
How do I enter a mixed number?
Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction: 2 1/4 means two and a quarter. A negative mixed number such as −1 1/2 means −(1 + 1/2).
Why can I not use square roots here?
Most roots, such as √2, are not fractions at all, so they cannot be kept exact. Use the scientific calculator for those.
