Desk Height Calculator: Ergonomic Chair, Desk, and Monitor Heights
Work out an ergonomic setup from your height: chair seat height, sitting desk or keyboard height, standing desk height, the height of the top of your monitor, and how far away to put it, in centimetres or inches.
Desk Height Calculator: Ergonomic Chair, Desk, and Monitor Heights: Your height is turned into the heights that matter using the proportions of an average adult from the Bodyspace anthropometry tables: the seat at the height of the back of your knee, the desk at elbow height so your forearms are level, and the top of the screen at about eye level, plus 2.5 cm for shoes. For someone 173 cm tall that is a seat of about 47 cm, a sitting desk of 72 cm, and a standing desk of 112 cm. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Heights are from the floor, wearing ordinary shoes, and come from average body proportions: seat height is about 25.5% of your height, elbow height when seated about 14.4% above the seat, and seated eye height about 46%; standing, the elbow is at about 63% and the eye at about 94%. The proportions are the median British adults in Pheasant and Haslegrave's Bodyspace; your own body may differ by a few centimetres, so treat these as a starting point, adjust the chair first, and raise the desk or use a footrest to match it.
Screen distance
About an arm's length, 50 to 75 cm, is comfortable for most monitors; larger screens can sit further away.
Body proportions
Proportions vary between people by a few centimetres, especially leg length, so take the results as a starting point and adjust until your feet, thighs, and forearms sit level.

Frequently asked questions
My desk does not adjust. What can I do?
Set the chair so your elbows are level with the desk, then use a footrest if your feet no longer rest flat on the floor.
Why put the top of the screen at eye level?
Your eyes naturally look slightly down, so with the top of the screen at eye level the middle of it sits comfortably below, and your neck stays upright.
What about a laptop?
A laptop cannot put both the keyboard and the screen at the right height. Raise it on a stand and use a separate keyboard and mouse.
