Snake Game: Grid, Speed Levels and Wrapping Walls
Play a grid snake game with arrow keys, swipes or direction buttons. Eat food, avoid collisions and choose one of five speeds with solid or wrapping walls.
Snake Game: Grid, Speed Levels and Wrapping Walls: Runs a snake on a 20 × 20 grid. Food appears only on empty cells. Direct reverse turns are ignored. Solid walls end the game on impact; wrapping walls carry you to the opposite edge. Filling every square wins. Pause stops movement, and best scores are saved for each speed and wall setting. Use arrow keys while the board is visible, swipe, or tap the direction buttons. Space pauses the game. You cannot turn directly backwards. Changing speed or walls starts a fresh game.
Rules and strategy
Leave yourself an exit route before taking food near a wall or your body. As the snake grows, follow wide loops and avoid cutting a large empty region off from the head. A steady route usually lasts longer than sharp last-second turns.
The five speed levels move once every 300, 220, 150, 100 or 70 milliseconds. Scores count food eaten, without a speed multiplier.
History
Growing-line games preceded mobile phones, and Snake became widely familiar on handsets in the late 1990s. HMD's 2017 history announcement identifies a 1997 handset as a milestone. How to use it
- Choose speed and whether the snake can wrap through walls. Press Start or a direction.
- Turn towards food using the arrow keys, swipe gestures or direction buttons.
- Each food adds one segment and one point. Avoid your body and, with solid walls, the edge of the grid.

Frequently asked questions
How do I play on a phone?
Swipe across the board or tap the direction buttons. The board captures swipes so they steer the snake instead of scrolling the page.
Why did a reverse turn do nothing?
You cannot turn directly into your neck. Turn at a right angle first. Only one turn is queued between movement steps.
What happens with wrapping walls?
Crossing an edge brings the snake out at the opposite edge in the same row or column. Hitting its own body still ends the game.
Can I change speed during a game?
Changing speed or the wall setting starts a fresh game so each best score uses one consistent set of rules.
