Typing Speed Test
Find out how fast you type in words per minute and how accurately, with a 15-second to 2-minute test of common words in seven languages, text with punctuation and numbers, or code, and a chart of your progress.
Typing Speed Test: The test shows random common words, colours each letter as you type it, and counts the characters of the words you typed correctly. Speed is given in words per minute, counting five characters as one word, alongside accuracy and your best result for each length, language, and mode. Punctuation mode adds capitals, commas, full stops, quotes, and numbers, as in real writing; code mode uses short lines of JavaScript, Python, SQL, CSS, and other languages. Each finished test is added to a chart of your progress. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

How words per minute are counted
Typing speed has been measured in five-character words since typewriter tests, so that a test of short words and one of long words give comparable numbers. Here a correctly typed word and the space after it count towards the total; a word with a mistake counts nothing, which is why accuracy and speed are linked.
Raw speed counts every character typed, right or wrong, and shows how fast your fingers move; the gap between raw speed and WPM is the cost of mistakes. Accuracy is worked out per keystroke, so a corrected typo still counts against it, as it does in most typing tests.
Getting a fair result
Short tests reward a quick start, and longer ones show the speed you can sustain; a one-minute test is the usual reference. Take a few tests and look at the typical result rather than the best one, and compare results only between tests of the same length and language.
A keyboard that misses or repeats keys lowers both speed and accuracy; the keyboard tester shows which keys register. For practice sessions, a pomodoro timer keeps them short and regular, which builds speed faster than occasional long ones.
How to use it
- Choose a length, the language of the words, and plain words, punctuation and numbers, or code.
- Start typing: the timer starts with your first key. Press space after each word.
- When time is up, read your speed and accuracy, and press Try again or Esc to restart.

Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts five characters, spaces included, as one word, so long and short words weigh the same. Only correctly typed words count towards WPM; raw speed counts everything typed, mistakes included. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that matched the text.
What is a good typing speed?
Many adults type around 35 to 45 WPM. Around 60 WPM is fast enough for most office work, and 80 WPM or more is well above average; professional typists and competitive typists go far beyond 100 WPM. Accuracy matters as much as speed: correcting mistakes costs time.
How can I type faster?
Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row, use every finger, and look at the screen instead of the keyboard. Practise a little every day, aim for accuracy first, and let speed follow. Short tests make good daily practice.
How do I type the Japanese test?
The Japanese test shows common words in kana with their romaji above them. Switch the input method off (direct input) and type the romaji, such as sakura for さくら, then press space.
