Percentage Difference Calculator

Compare two values using their average as the reference.

Percentage Difference Calculator: Compare two non-negative values on equal terms by expressing their gap as a percentage of their average. Neither entry is designated as the earlier or correct value, so swapping them gives the same percentage difference and the same absolute gap. ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Neither value is treated as a baseline; the average is the denominator.
  2. Use percentage change when one value is specifically the starting value.

Formula and worked example

Percentage difference = |first − second| ÷ ((first + second) ÷ 2) × 100

A neutral denominator for two peers

For first value a and second value b, absolute difference D = |a − b| and average M = (a + b) ÷ 2. Percentage difference P = D ÷ M × 100. The absolute-value sign discards direction; averaging gives both observations equal weight in the denominator. Use matching units and compare the same measured quantity.

Enter a = 80 and b = 100. The gap is |80 − 100| = 20, and M = (80 + 100) ÷ 2 = 90. Therefore P = 20 ÷ 90 × 100 = 22.222222…%. The displayed Percentage difference = 22.22% and Absolute difference = 20. Reversing the entries leaves both results unchanged.

The College of San Mateo physics introduction (https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/physics/docs/physics210/introduction.pdf) uses this average-based comparison when neither measurement is a reference standard. It is a convention, so state the denominator when sharing results.

Choosing difference, change or error

For a before-and-after comparison, percentage change is (new − old) ÷ old × 100. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes that starting-value method (https://www.bls.gov/cpi/factsheets/calculating-percent-changes.htm) for changes in an index. When comparing a measurement against an accepted value, a percent-error calculation uses that accepted value instead of the pair's average. This widget performs neither directional change nor reference-value error. For its non-negative inputs, the symmetric result lies between 0% for equal positive values and 200% when exactly one is zero; negative entries are rejected.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

Why does comparing 80 and 100 give 22.22%, not 25%?

This comparison divides the gap of 20 by the average of 90. A change from 80 to 100 instead divides by the starting 80 and gives a 25% increase. A change from 100 to 80 uses 100 and gives a 20% decrease.

What is the percentage difference when one value is zero?

If the other value is positive, the gap equals that value and the average is half of it, so the answer is 200%. If both entries are zero, the average is zero and this formula is undefined; the calculator reports an error rather than assigning 0%.

Is comparing two percentage rates the same as subtracting percentage points?

No. Rates of 10% and 12% are 2 percentage points apart. Entering 10 and 12 here gives a symmetric difference of 2 ÷ 11 × 100, about 18.18%. Use direct subtraction when the question asks for a point difference.
