Ratio to Percentage Calculator

Convert a part-to-whole ratio into a percentage.

Ratio to Percentage Calculator: Express a measured part as a percentage of a specified whole. Enter the two amounts separately to turn a fraction, completion count or share of a total into a rate, with the whole acting as the denominator. ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Part and whole use the same units.
  2. A part larger than the whole produces a percentage above 100%.

Formula and worked example

Percentage = part ÷ whole × 100

From a fraction to a rate per hundred

For part a, whole b and percentage p, p = a ÷ b × 100. Dividing finds the share as a decimal, and multiplying by 100 writes the same share per hundred. Both inputs must describe comparable quantities in the same units. The percentage has no physical unit because those matching units cancel in the division.

For Part = 30 and Whole = 120, first calculate 30 ÷ 120 = 0.25. Then multiply 0.25 × 100 = 25. The result reads Percentage = 25%. You can check it by taking 25% of 120: 0.25 × 120 = 30. In a completion example, that means 30 of 120 items have been completed.

The fraction-to-percent method in OpenStax (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra-2e/pages/6-1-understand-percent) expresses the ratio on a hundred-part scale. Ratios need not involve whole numbers.

Choose a whole that matches the question

If 30 items passed and 90 failed, the passing share uses the total 120, not the failing count 90. Likewise, converting 300 g out of 1.2 kg requires changing 1.2 kg to 1,200 g first; the share is 25%, not 25,000%. Multiplying both part and whole by any positive factor preserves the percentage.

A share of a total is different from movement over time. A count changing from 30 to 40 has relative growth of 10 ÷ 30 × 100, about 33.33%, even though 40 out of a total of 120 is also about 33.33%. The numerical coincidence does not make the denominators interchangeable. Label the part and whole when reporting a percentage so readers can reconstruct its meaning.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a ratio written as 2:3?

First decide what the terms mean. If it is part:whole, enter Part 2 and Whole 3 to get about 66.67%. If it describes two parts in a mixture, their total is 2 + 3 = 5, so the first part's share is 2 out of 5, or 40%.

Can the part exceed the whole in this ratio tool?

Yes. Part 150 and Whole 120 produce 125%. That can describe performance above a target, but it cannot be an ordinary subset's share of its own total. Check whether your denominator is a target or a complete count.

Why is a whole of zero invalid even when the part is zero?

The formula divides by the whole. With both values zero, there is no determined fraction; with a positive part and zero whole, division is still undefined. Part zero and a positive whole is valid and gives 0%.
