Increase a Number by Percentage Calculator
Add a chosen percentage to an original value.
Increase a Number by Percentage Calculator: Apply a chosen percentage uplift to a starting amount and see both the added amount and the new total. This answers what a value becomes after an increase, such as a stated price markup, rather than finding an unknown growth rate between two observations. New value
276
- Increase amount
- 36
New value = original + (original × percentage ÷ 100)- This tool applies a chosen percentage; it does not calculate the percentage change between two values.
- A 15% increase means multiplying by 1.15.
Formula and worked example
New value = original + (original × percentage ÷ 100)
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Original value | 240 |
| Increase percentage | 15% |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| New value | 276 |
| Increase amount | 36 |
Add the portion to the starting amount
Let O be the original value, p the increase percentage, I the added amount and N the new value. I = O × p ÷ 100; N = O + I = O × (1 + p ÷ 100). The multiplier includes the entire original amount as 1, then adds the extra fractional share.
With O = 240 and p = 15, I = 240 × 15 ÷ 100 = 36. Add it back: N = 240 + 36 = 276. The displayed New value = 276 and Increase amount = 36. These numbers keep the same units as the original entry.
OpenStax's percent-application lesson (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra-2e/pages/6-2-solve-general-applications-of-percent) calculates relative increases using the original amount. Each successive uplift has its own starting value.
Percentage points measure movement in a rate
Suppose a rate rises from 10% to 12%. The difference is 2 percentage points, but the relative increase is (12 − 10) ÷ 10 × 100 = 20%. To model that relative rise here, enter Original value 10 and Increase percentage 20; the new value is 12. Adding twenty percentage points would instead produce a 30% rate. When reporting a result, name both the starting rate and the convention. For repeated increases, multiply factors rather than add rates: two successive 10% uplifts produce 1.10 × 1.10 = 1.21, or a 21% total increase.

Frequently asked questions
Can this tool tell me the increase percentage between two prices?
Its inputs are a starting value and a percentage to apply. To find a rate from old and new prices, calculate (new − old) ÷ old × 100 separately. For 240 becoming 276, that rate is 36 ÷ 240 × 100 = 15%.
Why do a 20% increase and then a 20% decrease leave a loss?
The second percentage acts on a larger base. Starting at 100, the increase adds 20 to reach 120; decreasing 120 by 20% removes 24 and leaves 96. The multipliers 1.20 × 0.80 equal 0.96, a net 4% decrease.
What does a percentage uplift do to a starting value of zero?
The increase amount is zero, so the new value stays zero. A percentage applied to zero cannot create a positive amount. Describing a move from zero to a positive value as a percentage increase would require dividing by zero and has no defined finite rate.
