Wordle Solver

Filter five-letter ENABLE words by positional feedback and repeated-letter counts, then compare candidate guesses by expected information.

Wordle Solver: Replays two-pass feedback: greens consume copies first, then yellows consume remaining copies from left to right. This handles mixed green/grey and yellow/grey letters. Frequency scores count each distinct letter across the remaining candidates. Entropy assumes equally likely candidates and tests at most 80 ranked candidate guesses against at most 500 evenly spaced candidates. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Enter a guess and its feedback. Green fixes a position; yellow rules that position out; grey rules out extra copies of that letter. Click a tile to cycle its state. Use a dot for an unknown letter and ? for unknown feedback. For example, A.... with G???? fixes the first letter.

Guess 1

Loading the bundled word list…

Uses the public-domain ENABLE dictionary, filtered to five letters. It includes uncommon words and is not an official game answer list. Entropy assumes equally likely candidates and tests at most 80 candidate guesses against at most 500 candidates.

Dictionary and licence

Uses /data/enable1.txt already shipped by the word unscrambler. ENABLE is public domain; the solver filters to five ASCII letters. No new dictionary is shipped. The upstream wordlist project identifies ENABLE2K as public domain: https://github.com/en-wl/wordlist/blob/v2/Copyright

Ranking and expected information

A candidate score sums the number of remaining candidates containing each distinct letter in the guess. Entropy is −Σ p log2(p), where p is the fraction producing each feedback pattern. The cap is a performance choice, not a property of the game. Shannon, A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948): https://doi.org/10.1002/j.1538-7305.1948.tb01338.x

How to use it

  1. Enter guesses and click each tile to set its feedback, or type G/Y/X/? codes.
  2. Add up to six rows; use ? for unknown feedback.
  3. Read ranked matches or calculate the best next guess among the tested candidates.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official answer list?

No. It uses only the existing public-domain ENABLE dictionary and includes uncommon words. No NYT answer or allowed-word list is used.

What if a letter is both yellow and grey?

In the same guess, the coloured copies establish how many copies occur; grey extra copies limit the count. For ALLEY against APPLE, feedback is GYXYX: exactly one L, excluded from positions two and three.

Is the best guess globally optimal?

It is the highest entropy among the tested guesses. Above 80 candidates the guess search is capped; above 500 candidates the answer distribution is sampled. The interface reports both limits.
