Palindrome Checker: Does It Read the Same Backwards?
Check whether a word, sentence, or number is a palindrome, ignoring spaces, punctuation, capitals, and accents, see the longest palindrome hidden inside, and test a whole list one line at a time.
Palindrome Checker: Does It Read the Same Backwards?: The text is reduced to its letters and digits, lower-cased and with accents removed, and compared with its reverse. “A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!” becomes amanaplanacanalpanama, which reads the same both ways. The longest palindrome inside is found by growing outwards from every letter: in “I saw a racecar today” it is racecar. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Spaces, punctuation, capital letters, and accents are ignored, as is usual for palindromes, so “Was it a car or a cat I saw?” counts. Numbers work too, such as 12321. With each line checked separately, you can test a whole list of words at once.
Famous palindromes
“Never odd or even”, “Step on no pets”, and “Madam, in Eden, I'm Adam” are classics; the Latin square SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS reads the same in four directions.
Numbers and dates
Numbers such as 12321 are palindromes, as are dates like 2021-12-02 when written without separators. For other word games, rearrange letters with the anagram checker.
How to use it

Frequently asked questions
Do spaces and punctuation count?
No: by the usual convention only letters and digits are compared, so “Was it a car or a cat I saw?” is a palindrome.
Does it work in other languages?
Yes, for any alphabet: accents are ignored, so the French “Ésope reste ici et se repose” passes. Chinese and Japanese text is compared character by character.
What is the longest palindrome word in English?
Common candidates are “tattarrattat”, coined by James Joyce, and the dictionary words “redivider” and “racecar”.
