Vietnamese Keyboard: Telex and VNI typing methods

Type Vietnamese accents with Latin keys using Telex or VNI, including modern or old style tone placement.

Vietnamese Keyboard: Telex and VNI typing methods: Telex uses repeated vowels, w, dd and the tone letters s, f, r, x and j. VNI uses digits 1–5 for tones and 6–9 for vowel shapes and barred d. The tone follows the vowel group as you continue typing. Modern placement gives the second vowel the tone in open oa, oe and uy groups; old style uses the first. Telex: aa, ee, oo add a circumflex; aw, ow, uw add a breve or horn; dd gives đ. Use s, f, r, x, j for tones and z to clear marks.

Mapping is active only inside the text box. Key captions show physical positions. Base and Shift levels are available; extra characters are below. Paste and device input methods also work.

Text is saved on this device for this keyboard. Clear removes it. Nothing is uploaded. System fonts display the script; missing glyphs may need a device font update.

Layout and standard

Telex and VNI are typing conventions, not national physical keyboard standards. The UniKey user manual (https://www.unikey.org/support/x-unikey-manual.pdf) documents both methods.

Layout source: Latin physical key positions follow US QWERTY. XKB Vietnamese direct-character layouts are a separate input method: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config/-/blob/master/symbols/vn . XKB data is available under permissive X11 terms: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config . Base and Shift levels are shown; extra characters are supplied as buttons.

Typing and device setup

Mapping applies only while the text box is focused. Paste and device input methods remain available. System fonts shape the characters; if characters are missing, enable a font that covers the script on your device.

Add a system input source in your device language or keyboard settings when you need to type in other applications. Frequently asked questions

How do I type Viet Nam with accents?

In Telex type Vieejt Nam. In VNI type Vie65t Nam. The result is the Vietnamese spelling with a circumflex and dot below.

What does old style change?

It changes tone placement in open oa, oe and uy groups. With a final consonant, placement follows the closed syllable. Vowels with a circumflex or horn take priority.

How can I remove or type a literal accent key?

Use z in Telex or 0 in VNI to clear the current word’s marks. Repeating the same tone or shape command removes that mark and inserts the command literally. Space or punctuation finishes the active word.
