Ability Score Calculator: 5e Point Buy, Standard Array, and 4d6

Create a character's six ability scores for fifth-edition role-playing games: spend 27 points with point buy, assign the standard array of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8, or roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die, then add bonuses and see each modifier.

Ability Score Calculator: 5e Point Buy, Standard Array, and 4d6: Every score in point buy starts at 8, and raising it costs 1 point a step up to 13, then 2 points each for 14 and 15, from a budget of 27; the standard array costs exactly 27 too. A modifier is the score minus 10, halved and rounded down: 15 gives +2, 8 gives −1. Rolls use your browser's secure random numbers. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Frequently asked questions

Which method is fairest?

Point buy and the standard array give every player the same total; rolling is more exciting but can leave characters uneven.

Can I go above 15 with point buy?

Not before bonuses: point buy covers 8 to 15, and bonuses from background or species can raise a score further.

Why is the lowest die dropped?

Rolling four dice and keeping the best three gives an average of about 12.2 instead of 10.5, so characters are a little above average.
