A hundredth of the whole
Write p for the entered percentage, T for the total value and R for the resulting portion. R = (p ÷ 100) × T. The word percent means per hundred: 15% is the fraction 15/100, or decimal 0.15. Multiplying that fraction by the total converts a relative share into an amount with the total's unit.
For p = 15 and T = 240, divide 15 by 100 to get 0.15. Then R = 0.15 × 240 = 36. The widget displays Result = 36. If 240 means kilograms, the portion is 36 kilograms; if it means pounds sterling, the portion is £36. The tool itself does not assign a currency.
OpenStax explains percent as a fraction with denominator 100 (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra-2e/pages/6-1-understand-percent). This makes 50% one half and 25% one quarter, useful checks on mental arithmetic.
An amount, a rate and a change
Choose the denominator before calculating. Fifteen per cent of the original budget may differ from fifteen per cent of the remaining budget. To find what percentage an observed portion represents, reverse the relationship with portion ÷ total × 100 instead. To describe movement from an old amount to a new amount, calculate the difference relative to the old amount. That change calculation is undefined when the old amount is zero, although this percentage-of calculation still works for a zero total. Do not add a bare number such as 15 to 240 when the intended instruction is fifteen per cent of 240.

Frequently asked questions
Should I enter 15 or 0.15 for fifteen per cent?
Enter 15. The calculator divides the percentage by 100 for you. Entering 0.15 asks for 0.15%, which is one hundredth of 15%; on a total of 240 that gives 0.36 rather than 36.
Does taking 15% of a price show the price after a discount?
It shows the discount amount only. For a price of 240, the 15% portion is 36, leaving 204 after subtraction. Use the decrease calculator if you want the remaining price and reduction shown together.
Are 0% and percentages above 100 allowed?
Yes. Zero per cent returns zero, while 150% of 240 is 360. A percentage above 100 represents more than one complete total. The percentage and total must both be non-negative; taking any supported percent of zero also returns zero.
