Decrease a Number by Percentage Calculator
Subtract a chosen percentage from an original value.
Decrease a Number by Percentage Calculator: Reduce a starting value by a specified percentage and see how much was removed as well as what remains. It is useful for a stated discount or reduction when the original amount and reduction rate are already known. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

New value
204
- Decrease amount
- 36
New value = original − (original × percentage ÷ 100)- This tool applies a chosen percentage; it does not calculate the percentage change between two values.
- A decrease greater than 100% can produce a negative result.
Formula and worked example
New value = original − (original × percentage ÷ 100)
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Original value | 240 |
| Decrease percentage | 15% |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| New value | 204 |
| Decrease amount | 36 |
Separate the reduction from the remainder
Use O for original value, p for decrease percentage, D for decrease amount and N for the new value. D = O × p ÷ 100 and N = O − D = O × (1 − p ÷ 100). The subtracted portion is measured against the original entry, while the result shows the portion left over.
For O = 240 and p = 15, D = 240 × 15 ÷ 100 = 36. Subtract 36 from 240 to get N = 204. The result sheet displays New value = 204 and Decrease amount = 36. Equivalently, 85% of 240 is 204, which provides a second check on the calculation.
OpenStax's discount examples (https://openstax.org/books/elementary-algebra-2e/pages/3-2-solve-percent-applications) distinguish the amount taken off from the reduced price. This page applies the rate you supply.
Successive discounts and falls in a rate
Two discounts are not normally added: reducing 200 by 10% gives 180, then reducing that by 25% gives 135. The overall reduction is 65 out of 200, or 32.5%, rather than 35%. Each step changes the amount on which the next discount is calculated.
A rate dropping from 25% to 20% falls by 5 percentage points. Its relative decrease is 5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 20%. Enter original 25 and decrease 20 to model that fall here. Percentage points are found by subtracting the two rates directly. If the original amount is zero, applying a decrease still returns zero, but a change rate inferred from a zero starting amount is undefined.
How to use it

Frequently asked questions
Does a 100% decrease leave anything?
No. It removes the entire starting amount and returns zero. This tool also accepts reductions over 100%, which produce negative results from a positive original value. For an ordinary non-negative selling price, such a rate would not describe a usable discount.
Can I restore a 20% discount by adding 20%?
A starting price of 100 falls to 80. Twenty per cent of 80 is only 16, so adding it produces 96. Restoring 100 requires a 25% increase on 80, because the missing 20 is one quarter of the reduced price.
How do I find the original price from the discounted price?
Use original = discounted price ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100). In the reverse-percentage tool, enter the percentage remaining: a 15% discount leaves 85%. Entering result 204 and percentage 85 recovers 240. A full 100% discount cannot identify the original price.
