DOCX to Markdown: Private Browser Tool
Convert a local DOCX to GitHub-flavoured Markdown, preview its structure and download the text with original images in a ZIP or as one file with embedded images.
DOCX to Markdown: Private Browser Tool: Turn an emailed document into Markdown for a repository, notes app or publishing workflow. Headings, emphasis, links, nested lists and tables become readable markup. The first table row becomes a header; merged cells become blank cells where needed. A ZIP keeps original images alongside document.md. Underlines and footnote anchors use small HTML tags, which some viewers disable. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

The default download is a ZIP containing document.md and original images. Embedded mode downloads one Markdown file; some Markdown viewers block data URIs. Underlines and footnote anchors use small HTML tags. The first table row becomes a Markdown header.
Headings, lists and tables are kept; page layout, fonts and floating positions are not. Merged cells are approximated. Headers, footers, comments, endnotes, equations and embedded objects are omitted. Deleted revisions are omitted; inserted text is included. External pictures are never fetched.
Document structure
ECMA-376 (https://ecma-international.org/publications-and-standards/standards/ecma-376/) defines the document structure and packaging used by DOCX files. Conversion keeps readable structure rather than the printed page layout.
Markdown conventions
The GitHub-flavoured Markdown specification (https://github.github.com/gfm/) describes tables, strikethrough, links and list syntax. Underlines have no native Markdown syntax, so they use a small HTML tag.
What is preserved
Headings, paragraphs, emphasis, hyperlinks, nested lists, tables, line and page breaks, text boxes and footnotes are read from the document. Merged cells are approximated. Headers, footers, comments, endnotes, equations and embedded objects are omitted. Deleted revisions are omitted; inserted text is included.
PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images can appear in the preview. Other stored image formats remain downloadable from the image extractor. External pictures are never fetched.
How to use it

Frequently asked questions
Will images work when I copy the Markdown?
In ZIP mode, copied text refers to the images folder. Download and unpack the ZIP beside your Markdown file. Embedded mode uses data URIs, which some Markdown viewers block.
Does the preview exactly match my Markdown app?
The preview shows the document structure. Markdown viewers differ in their handling of raw HTML, image data URIs and tables.
Can I open an old DOC file?
No. Save it as an unencrypted DOCX first. Protected and damaged files get a clear error.
