DOCX to Text: Private Browser Tool

Extract plain text from a local DOCX, with optional list markers and tab-separated or aligned tables. Copy or download a UTF-8 text file in your browser.

DOCX to Text: Private Browser Tool: Get the words out of a document for searching, editing or pasting into another tool. Paragraphs, lists, tables, text boxes and footnotes are retained as text, while pictures and visual formatting are removed. Tab-separated tables are convenient for spreadsheets. Aligned columns suit a monospace editor; wide Unicode characters may need adjustment. Explicit page breaks become form-feed characters. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Tab-separated tables are convenient for spreadsheets. Aligned columns work best in a monospace font; wide characters may need adjustment. Page breaks become form-feed characters. Footnote text is appended; formatting and pictures are removed.

Headings, lists and tables are kept; page layout, fonts and floating positions are not. Merged cells are approximated. Headers, footers, comments, endnotes, equations and embedded objects are omitted. Deleted revisions are omitted; inserted text is included. External pictures are never fetched.

Document structure

ECMA-376 (https://ecma-international.org/publications-and-standards/standards/ecma-376/) defines the document structure and packaging used by DOCX files. Conversion keeps readable structure rather than the printed page layout.

Text and table layout

Unicode (https://www.unicode.org/standard/standard.html) defines the characters used in the UTF-8 export. Tabs separate table cells; line breaks separate rows. These separators help you paste the result into other editors.

What is preserved

Headings, paragraphs, emphasis, hyperlinks, nested lists, tables, line and page breaks, text boxes and footnotes are read from the document. Merged cells are approximated. Headers, footers, comments, endnotes, equations and embedded objects are omitted. Deleted revisions are omitted; inserted text is included.

PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images can appear in the preview. Other stored image formats remain downloadable from the image extractor. External pictures are never fetched.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

Do hyperlinks stay clickable?

The visible link text is kept, but the link target and formatting are removed. Use DOCX to HTML or Markdown to keep links.

Which table option should I choose?

Use tab-separated cells for pasting into spreadsheets. Use aligned columns for reading in a monospace text editor. Merged cells are approximated with blank positions.

Where do footnotes go?

Footnote text is appended after the body. The text-only output does not add reference markers to the body.
