Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator: Annual Estimate

Estimate your annual carbon footprint for home energy, car travel, flights and diet. Set your own electricity grid factor and flight distances, then compare the category totals in tonnes of CO2e.

Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator: Annual Estimate: Multiplies annual activity by the 2026 UK Government factors. Diet uses Scarborough et al. (2023), Nature Food, Table 3 daily medians multiplied by 365. Shopping is omitted because no defensible low, medium and high factors were established. The result covers only the displayed categories. Estimate one person's annual footprint for the categories below. The starting amounts are editable examples. Enter your share of household energy, excluding car charging already counted under car travel.

Home energy per year

The grid factor starts at the UK 2026 generation example, 0.13096 kg CO2e/kWh. Replace it with a factor for your electricity supply. There is no country lookup.

Car travel per year

Average UK car factors. The battery electric factor includes UK electricity generation and network losses; it does not change with the home grid input. Vehicle manufacture and upstream fuel supply are excluded.

Flights per year

Count a return journey as two flights. Distances are editable examples, not measured averages. Uses UK-linked economy factors with radiative forcing; use the flight calculator for individual routes.

Diet

Diet uses UK study medians standardised to 2,000 kcal/day, multiplied by 365 days. These are broad estimates, not nutrition targets. Shopping and other unlisted activities are excluded.

Annual total for included categories6.63 tonnes CO2e
  • Diet2569.6 kg CO2e
  • Home energy2450.2 kg CO2e

Start with your largest categories

  1. Diet: consider more plant-based meals and reduce food waste.
  2. Home energy: start with the largest energy use on your bills; reduce heating demand and wasted electricity where practical.
  3. Car travel: replace suitable car journeys with walking, cycling or public transport, and combine trips.

How to use it

  1. Enter your annual share of home energy and your electricity grid factor.
  2. Add car distance, one-way flight counts and average distances, then choose a diet group.
  3. Read the breakdown and tips ordered by your largest categories.

Frequently asked questions

Is the electricity factor right for my country?

The starting factor is a labelled UK 2026 generation example: 0.13096 kg CO2e per kWh. Replace it with a suitable local or supplier factor. No per-country table is included.

What do the car factors cover?

They represent average UK cars. Petrol, diesel and non-plug-in hybrid factors cover direct operation. The battery electric example includes UK electricity generation and network losses and does not follow the home grid input. Vehicle manufacture and upstream fuel supply are excluded.

How are flights counted?

Enter one-way flights; a return journey counts twice. Starting distances of 1500 km and 6500 km are editable scenario assumptions, not sourced statistical averages. The estimate uses economy-class UK-linked factors with radiative forcing.

How accurate is the diet estimate?

It uses UK study medians standardised to 2000 kcal per day, age and gender. Food production varies considerably, so these groups are broad estimates, not precise individual measurements or nutrition targets.
