Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate fuel used and trip cost from distance, efficiency, and fuel price.

Fuel Cost Calculator: Estimate the fuel quantity and fuel bill for a journey using distance, efficiency and a price per fuel unit. The efficiency input expects distance travelled per unit of fuel, so consistent units are essential to a useful estimate. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Distance, efficiency and fuel price

Fuel used = trip distance ÷ distance per fuel unit. Fuel cost = fuel used × price per fuel unit. For 300 miles, efficiency of 30 miles per gallon and a price of 4 per gallon, fuel used is 300 ÷ 30 = 10 gallons and estimated cost is 10 × 4 = 40.

OpenStax explains unit rates with distance and fuel examples (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra/pages/5-6-ratios-and-rate). The distance units cancel in this division, leaving fuel units. The currency comes from your fuel-price input, not from a live price lookup.

Preparing a journey estimate

Include both directions in distance when estimating a return journey; the tool has no return-trip toggle. Choose an efficiency appropriate to the scenario you want to model. If you reduce distance per fuel unit while keeping distance unchanged, estimated fuel use rises. Traffic, load and driving conditions are not modelled separately.

For a hypothetical consumption of 8 L/100 km, the equivalent efficiency input is 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 km/L. A 300 km journey then uses 24 litres. Distance and efficiency must be positive, while a zero fuel price returns zero estimated cost without changing the fuel quantity. Rounding on the screen does not replace the underlying arithmetic.

How to use it

  1. Enter values using the units and assumptions shown beside each field.
  2. Calculate the fixed formula locally in your browser.
  3. Review the estimate and copy the result when useful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter litres per 100 kilometres directly?

No. That is fuel per distance, while the input expects distance per fuel. Convert consumption c in L/100 km to 100 ÷ c kilometres per litre, then use kilometres for distance and a price per litre. Entering c unchanged would invert the relationship.

Can I use miles per gallon?

Yes, when trip distance is in miles and fuel price is per the same gallon definition as the efficiency. US and imperial gallons differ. The widget does not convert gallons, litres, miles or kilometres, so reconcile those units before calculating.

Does this include tolls or the whole cost of driving?

It includes only the estimated fuel quantity multiplied by fuel price. Parking, tolls, maintenance and other vehicle costs have no inputs here. Add them separately if you need a complete journey budget.
