Rising Sign Calculator

Find the ascendant and Midheaven from a birth date, exact time and place, with historical time zones or a manual UTC offset.

Rising Sign Calculator: Calculates the ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon and the Midheaven. Search a city or enter coordinates, confirm the birth time offset, and read each position as a zodiac sign with degrees and minutes. Astronomical method

Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, second edition (Willmann-Bell, 1998), chapters 12 and 22, gives sidereal time and mean obliquity. Standard spherical astronomy relates the ecliptic to the local horizon. Positions use the tropical zodiac and mean obliquity; near polar latitudes the ascendant can behave unusually.

Historical local offsets follow your browser’s time zone data. A repeated local time requires an occurrence choice; a skipped time requires a corrected time or manual offset. Exact birth time and coordinates affect the answer.

How to use it

  1. Enter your birth date and time.
  2. Search a city or enter latitude, longitude and a time zone.
  3. Confirm the UTC offset and calculate your ascendant and Midheaven.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ascendant mean astronomically?

It is the ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon at the chosen instant and location. The Midheaven is the upper intersection of the ecliptic with the local meridian.

Why can I choose two offsets?

When clocks move backwards, a local time can occur twice. Choose the earlier or later occurrence from your birth record. A manual offset lets you use a documented historical offset instead.
