Reduction methods and worked examples
Repeatedly sum decimal digits until reaching a single digit or 11, 22 or 33. The part-first method retains these master numbers while reducing each date part and the final sum. The all-digits method retains them while reducing the full digit sum. Leading zeroes stay visible in the birth-date calculation and contribute zero.
| Birth date | Part-first method (primary) | All-digits method | Compound/root |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1990-06-15 | Month 6; day 1 + 5 = 6; year 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 10 → 1; 6 + 6 + 1 = 13 → 4 | 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 + 0 + 6 + 1 + 5 = 31 → 4 | 31/4 |
| 1980-01-01 | Month 1; day 1; year 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18 → 9; 1 + 1 + 9 = 11 | 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 1 = 20 → 2 | 20/2 |
The compound/root notation always records the all-digits calculation. It can therefore have a different root from the primary number. The birthday number reduces the birth day. The personal year replaces the birth year with the chosen calendar year and follows the part-first convention.
Pythagorean letter table
Assign the Latin alphabet sequentially from 1 to 9, restarting at 1 after I and R. Remove accents before assigning values. This page uses A, E, I, O and U as vowels and always treats Y as a consonant; it does not attempt syllable analysis or automatic transliteration.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
For JOHN SMITH, J + O + H + N + S + M + I + T + H gives 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 44 → 8. The vowels O and I give 15 → 6; the consonants give 29 → 11. An empty vowel or consonant group has no number, rather than a personality interpretation of zero.
Cultural context
Encyclopaedia Britannica’s numerology overview (https://www.britannica.com/topic/numerology) provides background on the tradition. The exact rules used by this calculator are stated above because numerology has no single scientific standard. Keyword descriptions are original summaries of traditional associations, with no predictions or advice.

Frequently asked questions
Why do numerology sites give different life path numbers?
The two common methods stop at different stages. Method 1 reduces the month, day and year separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33, then adds and reduces them. Method 2 adds every birth-date digit before reducing. For 1980-01-01, method 1 gives 1 + 1 + 9 = 11, while method 2 gives 20 → 2. This calculator highlights method 1 and shows both.
What are master numbers?
In this convention, 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers. Reduction stops when one appears, including within a month, day or year. Other traditions may use different stopping rules. These are traditional labels, not evidence of special abilities.
What does a compound number such as 31/4 mean?
The first number is the unreduced sum of every birth-date digit. The second is its reduced result, retaining master numbers. For 1990-06-15, the digits total 31 and 3 + 1 = 4, so the notation is 31/4. This is popular in Taiwan and is shown in every language. When the methods differ, the root belongs to method 2, rather than the primary part-first result.
How do name numbers work, and why are Latin letters needed?
The Pythagorean table assigns A–I the values 1–9 and repeats the cycle through Z. Expression or Destiny sums all letters; Soul Urge sums A, E, I, O and U; Personality sums consonants. This calculator treats Y as a consonant. Accents are removed, and spaces, punctuation and digits are ignored. Use a Latin spelling such as pinyin or romaji for other scripts; different spellings can give different numbers.
What is a personal year number?
It is a traditional number for a chosen calendar year. This calculator applies the part-first rule: reduce the birth month, birth day and chosen year, keeping master numbers, then add and reduce. For 15 June and 2026, that is 6 + 6 + 1 = 13 → 4. It describes a numerology convention and does not forecast events.
Is numerology scientific?
No. Numerology is a cultural tradition, not a scientific way to measure personality or predict events. The arithmetic is reproducible; the meanings assigned to its results are traditional interpretations.
