Reverse GIF: Backwards and Boomerang Playback

Reverse an animated GIF or make a ping-pong loop. Watch the updated animation and download it without uploading your file.

Reverse GIF: Backwards and Boomerang Playback: Starts in reverse order, with the last displayed frame first. Each image keeps its own delay. Ping-pong appends the interior frames in reverse order to the forward sequence, so the endpoints are not repeated at the turn. The source repeat setting is retained. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Reverse plays the last frame first. Ping-pong plays forwards and then backwards, without repeating the turnaround frames.

Displayed frames

GIF transparency and disposal determine how each displayed image depends on earlier images. Reversing complete displayed frames keeps those dependencies resolved. Specification: https://www.w3.org/Graphics/GIF/spec-gif89a.txt

Frame delays

Frame delays remain subject to browser scheduling and short-delay normalisation. Firefox's timing rule: https://github.com/mozilla/gecko-dev/blob/master/image/FrameTimeout.h

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

What happens to different frame delays?

Each displayed frame keeps its original delay when its order changes, so a long-held frame still lasts longer.

Why does ping-pong contain fewer than twice as many frames?

The first and last frames appear once in each cycle. For A, B, C, the cycle is A, B, C, B.

Does the result loop forever?

It keeps the source repeat setting. A source that plays once still plays once; an infinite loop remains infinite.
