GIF Speed Changer: Faster or Slower Playback

Change GIF speed from 0.25× to 4×, or set one delay for every frame. Check the live result and duration before downloading.

GIF Speed Changer: Faster or Slower Playback: Starts at 2× speed. A multiplier preserves the relative timing of frames until the minimum delay is reached. A fixed delay makes every frame last equally long. Delays are rounded to hundredths of a second and capped at a minimum of 2 cs; frame dropping discards the removed frames' delays to go faster. Browsers clamp GIF delays under 2 cs to 10 cs. The result uses at least 2 cs (20 ms), so very fast speeds are capped. Drop frames to go faster; here their delays are discarded.

GIF timing

The Graphic Control Extension records a delay in hundredths of a second. Specification: https://www.w3.org/Graphics/GIF/spec-gif89a.txt

Browser minimum delays

Firefox normalises raw timeouts of 0–10 ms to 100 ms. This tool uses a 20 ms minimum to avoid that short-delay fallback. Source: https://github.com/mozilla/gecko-dev/blob/master/image/FrameTimeout.h

How to use it

  1. Choose a GIF.
  2. Set a multiplier or a fixed delay; optionally drop every Nth frame.
  3. Watch the updated preview and download the GIF.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a 4× GIF run slower than expected?

Browsers clamp delays under 2 cs to 10 cs. This tool writes at least 2 cs (20 ms), so a frame that already lasts 20 ms cannot play four times faster. Drop frames to shorten the animation further.

Does a fixed delay keep pauses?

No. Every retained frame gets the same delay. Use a multiplier if you want to keep the relative timing of pauses.

Does this add frames to smooth slow motion?

No. It changes the time each frame stays on screen, without inventing frames.
