Images to GIF Maker

Turn photos or pictures into an animated GIF: put the frames in order, set the time per frame, the size, and how many times it repeats, and download it, all in your browser.

Images to GIF Maker: Each picture is drawn into a frame the size of the first one, fitted whole on a background colour or cropped to fill. GIF allows only 256 colours, so the encoder picks the 256 that best represent all the frames, keeping the exact colours of simple pictures, and maps every pixel to the nearest one. The frames are compressed with GIF's LZW method and saved with their delays and the repeat setting, by an encoder that runs in this page. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Timing the animation

Half a second per frame suits a slideshow of photos; 0.1 seconds or less makes motion look smooth, as in a flip-book. Browsers treat very short delays, under 0.02 seconds, as slower ones, so this tool does not go below that.

To make a GIF from a video clip instead, use video to GIF, and to shrink still pictures, the image compressor.

When not to use a GIF

For long or photographic animations, a short MP4 or WebM video is a fraction of the size with full colour, and most sites play it like a GIF. GIF is still the format that works everywhere, in email and chat included.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop the pictures, up to 60, and put them in order.
  2. Set the time per frame, how often it repeats, the width, and how pictures of other shapes fit.
  3. Press Make GIF, check the preview, and download it.

Privacy & limitations

Your pictures never leave your device; the GIF is made in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why do photos look grainy or banded as a GIF?

GIF can show only 256 colours at once, which smooth photos with many shades exceed. Graphics, screenshots, and illustrations with flat colours look sharp. For photos, a smaller width also helps.

How do I make the file smaller?

Use fewer frames, a smaller width, and pictures with fewer colours. A GIF's size grows with every frame, so 10 frames at 480 pixels is far smaller than 60 at 800.

Can I make a GIF from a video?

Yes, with the video to GIF tool, which picks frames from a video clip.
