Genkou Youshi: Printable Japanese Manuscript Paper (原稿用紙)

Print 原稿用紙, the squared manuscript paper used for Japanese essays and school assignments: 400-character (20 × 20) or 200-character (20 × 10) sheets, for vertical or horizontal writing, on A4 or B4, in red-brown, green, blue, or grey, with the fold in the middle and room for a name and title if you want it.

Genkou Youshi: Printable Japanese Manuscript Paper (原稿用紙): Each sheet is drawn as vector lines at true size: twenty squares to a line, with a narrow strip between lines for furigana and punctuation, and on 20-line vertical sheets a blank band down the middle where the page is folded, marked with two small circles. The squares are made as large as the paper allows inside a 15 mm margin, 9 mm on A4 for 400 characters. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

9.0 mm squares · print at 100%
20 × 20

Print at 100% (actual size). For vertical writing, start in the top-right square and read down each column, right to left; the strip beside each line is for furigana and punctuation, and the blank band in the middle is where a 400-character sheet is folded. Nothing is uploaded.

Counting characters

A full 400-character sheet holds 400 squares; teachers often count an essay by sheets, so a three-page essay is up to 1,200 characters.

Printing

Print at 100% or "actual size", not "fit to page", so the squares keep their size.

How to use it

  1. Choose 400 or 200 characters, vertical or horizontal.
  2. Choose the paper and line colour.
  3. Print at 100%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write on 原稿用紙?

In vertical writing, start at the top right and go down each line, moving left. Leave the first square of each new paragraph blank, give small kana and punctuation their own square, and put the title and your name on the first lines.

Which is right for school?

Most schools use 400-character sheets for essays, vertical on B4 or A4. Check your teacher's instructions for the paper size.

Can I use it for English?

Yes: horizontal sheets work as handwriting or character-practice paper in any language.
