Tian Zi Ge Paper (田字格、米字格练字纸)

Print Chinese character practice paper: tian zi ge (田字格) and mi zi ge (米字格) squares, with or without pinyin lines above each row, in sizes from 10 to 25 mm, as an exact-size PDF for A4 or Letter.

Tian Zi Ge Paper (田字格、米字格练字纸): Each square is divided by a dashed cross (田字格), or by the cross and both diagonals (米字格), so a learner can place each stroke. The pinyin version adds four lines making three equal spaces above every row of squares, as on primary-school 拼音田字格 workbooks. The page is drawn as vector lines, so the squares print at exactly the chosen size. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Print at 100% (actual size), not fit to page, for the squares to measure exactly.

Using the sheets

Write each character so that it fills about four fifths of its square, with its centre on the dashed cross; the guides show where strokes should start and stop. On pinyin sheets, write the syllable above its character, with the tone mark over the main vowel.

For ruled or handwriting paper in Latin letters, see lined paper; to get the pinyin for a text, the pinyin converter.

How much fits on a page

On A4 with 16 mm squares and space between the rows, a sheet holds 11 squares across and 14 rows, or 9 rows when each has pinyin lines. Smaller squares fit more: choose 12 mm for a fuller page of adult practice.

For squared paper without the guides, see graph paper.

How to use it

  1. Choose tian zi ge or mi zi ge, with or without pinyin lines.
  2. Pick a square size, colour, and paper.
  3. Download the PDF or print, at 100% scale.

Frequently asked questions

What size squares should a child use?

Larger squares of 18 to 20 mm suit first and second graders; 14 to 16 mm suits older pupils, and 10 to 12 mm adults practising small handwriting.

What is the difference between 田字格 and 米字格?

A 田字格 square is quartered by a cross; a 米字格 also has both diagonals, which help when practising slanting strokes.

Why do the squares print smaller than chosen?

The printer scaled the page to fit; choose actual size or 100% in the print dialogue.
