Date Difference Calculator
Find the signed number of calendar days between two dates.
Date Difference Calculator: Measure the signed calendar-day distance between two dates, its absolute size and its equivalent in weeks. Reversing the inputs reverses the signed results while leaving absolute days unchanged. Count the starting date but exclude the ending date when listing the days in a forward interval; identical dates have a distance of zero. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Days = end date − start date (end exclusive)- The result is signed: reversed dates produce a negative day count.
- The start date is included and the end date is excluded.
Formula and worked example
Days = end date − start date (end exclusive)
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Start date | Jan 1, 2025 |
| End date | Jan 31, 2025 |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| Calendar days | 30 |
| Absolute days | 30 |
| Weeks | 4.29 |
Three outputs from one date difference
Let S and E be the start and end dates as consecutive day numbers. Signed days D = E − S; absolute days A = |D|; weeks W = D ÷ 7. Unlike whole-week counting, the fraction is retained for the weeks calculation. Display rounding does not change the underlying day count.
Enter S = 2024-03-09 and E = 2024-03-11. The two date steps are 9 to 10 March and 10 to 11 March, so D = 2 and A = 2. W = 2 ÷ 7 = 0.285714… weeks, displayed as 0.29. The widget therefore gives 2 calendar days, 2 absolute days and 0.29 weeks.
Endpoint and daylight-saving distinctions
A forward date range can be viewed as including its starting date and excluding its ending date. That matches the number of one-day steps between the endpoints. It is different from the business days calculator, which tests both endpoints for weekday eligibility.
NIST describes the skipped or repeated hours of daylight saving (https://www.nist.gov/pml/time-and-frequency-division/popular-links/daylight-saving-time-dst). For an elapsed-hour comparison, use dated times with explicit zone information. Multiplying this page's day result by twenty-four does not establish the duration of a trip or shift across a local clock change.
How to use it
- Enter the interval's start and end dates.
- Calculate the signed days, absolute days and weeks.
- Use the sign to identify direction and the absolute count when only the size of the gap matters.

Frequently asked questions
How do I count both endpoints rather than the distance?
For a forward interval, add one to the calendar-day distance to count a list containing both endpoint dates. This widget reports the distance itself and has no include-end toggle.
Why are Weeks sometimes fractional?
Weeks is the signed day distance divided by seven, displayed to two decimal places. It is not a count of complete weeks; use weeks between dates if you want partial weeks discarded.
Does a two-date gap measure the hours that actually passed?
No. Dates have no clock time or time zone here. The calendar-day gap is stable across a daylight-saving change even when the elapsed hours between two local midnights differ from a fixed twenty-four-hour-per-day calculation.
