Countdown to a Date

Count down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds to a date that matters: a holiday, a trip, an exam, or a launch. Start from New Year, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, or pick your own date, and share it as a link.

Countdown to a Date: The countdown runs to midnight at the start of the date, or to the time you set, in this device's time zone, and updates every second. It also gives the number of weeks and days left, and rings with a notification if the page is open when the moment arrives. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Countdown

Pick a date.

Counts to the start of the day, or to the time you add, in this device's time zone. Easter is Western Easter; Thanksgiving is the US one, on the fourth Thursday of November.

How the countdown is counted

The countdown runs to the start of the chosen day, or to the time you set, in the time zone of the device showing it. It is worked out from the device's clock every second rather than counted down step by step, so it stays correct after the computer sleeps or the tab sits in the background.

The days shown in the large figures are whole 24-hour periods. The line beneath counts calendar days, so a date tomorrow is one day away even if it is less than 24 hours off. For the number of days between any two dates, or excluding weekends, use days until a date or the business day calculators.

Holidays that move

Western Easter falls on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, so it can be anywhere from 22 March to 25 April; the page computes it with the Gregorian Easter algorithm. Orthodox Easter follows the Julian calendar and is often later, so set it as a custom date.

US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, between 22 and 28 November. New Year, Valentine's Day, Halloween, and Christmas are fixed dates. Each holiday button picks the next occurrence, so a Christmas countdown opened on 26 December counts to next year's.

How to use it

  1. Pick a holiday, or choose a date in the calendar; add a time or a name only if you want one.
  2. Watch the countdown; it also shows in the browser tab's title.
  3. Press Copy link to share it, or Full screen to put it on display.

Privacy & limitations

The countdown runs in your browser. The last countdown is kept in this browser, and a shared link carries only its date, time, and title.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone does the countdown use?

The time zone of the device showing it. A shared countdown to 1 January at 00:00 reaches zero at midnight where each viewer is, just like New Year itself.

How are Easter and Thanksgiving dates worked out?

Easter is Western Easter, the date used by Catholic and Protestant churches, computed with the Gregorian Easter algorithm. Thanksgiving is the US holiday on the fourth Thursday of November; Canadian Thanksgiving, the second Monday of October, can be set as a custom date.

What happens once the date has passed?

The page says so, and then counts the time since the date instead. Holiday buttons always pick the next time the holiday comes round, today included.

Will it notify me if the tab is closed?

No, the bell and notification only come while the page is open. For a reminder at a set time with the tab closed, use the alarm clock with reminders with the tab closed switched on.
