YouTube Screenshot

Find the exact frame of a YouTube video and save it as a clean PNG, with no controls or title in the picture.

YouTube Screenshot: TOEA plays the video in a privacy-enhanced embed with YouTube's own controls switched off and supplies its own. To take the picture it uses the browser's screen sharing: it runs the clip from a few seconds before your moment, so YouTube's title bar and overlays have hidden, grabs the frame as the moment passes, pauses, and crops the picture to the player. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Runs entirely in your browser

The video plays in a privacy-enhanced embed with its own controls switched off. Use the controls below the player to find the frame.

Getting a sharp frame

The picture is limited by two things: the size of the player on your screen and the stream quality YouTube is sending at that moment. YouTube usually picks a higher quality for a larger player, so make the browser window wide on the largest, highest-resolution screen you have, and let the video play for a few seconds before capturing so the stream can settle at its best quality. For fast motion, look for a frame where the subject pauses; a frame taken mid-movement carries the motion blur of the video itself.

If you have the video file

For your own video, capture from the original file instead: the video screenshot tool reads the frame at its full resolution, without YouTube's compression and on phones too. A screenshot of someone else's video remains their work, so the usual limits on quoting and reuse apply.

How to use it

  1. Paste the video URL and load the player.
  2. Use the play, slider, and step buttons to land on the frame.
  3. Capture, choose this tab in the sharing prompt, and download the PNG.

Privacy & limitations

Nothing is downloaded from YouTube and nothing is sent to TOEA. The tab is shared with the page for a few seconds, one picture is taken, and sharing stops. The video stream itself is never touched.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the browser ask me to share my screen?

The player runs inside YouTube's own frame, which a page cannot read directly. Screen sharing is the only way for a page to see what is drawn there, and it needs your permission every time.

Why does the video play for a moment before the picture is taken?

YouTube shows its title bar, suggestions, and a play button whenever the video is paused, and hides them a few seconds into playback. Running the clip up to your moment is what gets a picture with nothing on top of it.

What resolution do I get?

The size of the player on your screen, multiplied by your display's pixel density. Make the browser window wide for a larger picture. It cannot exceed what is shown, so it is not the original 4K.

How precise is the frame?

The picture is taken as the playhead passes your moment, so expect it to be within a few hundredths of a second. Use the 0.1-second steps to choose the moment, then capture.

Why does it not work on my phone?

Mobile browsers do not offer screen sharing to web pages, so there is nothing for the tool to capture. Use a desktop browser.
