Stickers and animated WebP

Messaging stickers, WhatsApp's among them, are WebP files, typically 512 × 512 with a transparent background. Converting one gives a PNG that keeps the transparency, which slide software, document editors, and design tools accept. An animated WebP, whether a sticker or a short loop saved from a website, comes out as a single still frame; PNG cannot hold the motion.

Why the size jump varies

WebP has two modes. A lossless WebP, common for icons and graphics, holds exactly the pixels the PNG will, and Google's own measurements put lossless WebP roughly a quarter smaller than PNG, so the increase is modest. A lossy WebP photo can grow several times over, because every pixel, including the compression noise, is now stored exactly. If the PNG is too large for its destination and has no transparency to keep, WebP to JPG suits photographs better.

How to use it

  1. Choose a WebP image.
  2. Convert it locally.
  3. Preview and download the PNG.

Privacy & limitations

Processing is local. Animated WebP becomes a still image and embedded metadata is removed.
