VAT Calculator: Add or Remove VAT
Add VAT or consumption tax to a net price, or take it out of a gross price, at any rate, with presets for Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the UK.
VAT Calculator: Add or Remove VAT: Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate; taking it out uses gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate), because the tax is part of the gross price, not a percentage of it. Removing 20% VAT from 120 gives 20, not 24. The tax is rounded to the currency's smallest unit the way you choose; Japanese businesses may round consumption tax down, half up, or up, and many round down. Tax = net × rate ÷ 100. Rates shown were checked on 1 October 2026; check the current rate and which goods it applies to with your tax authority.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is taking the rate off the gross price: 20% of a 120 price is 24, but the VAT inside it is only 20. Another is rounding each line of an invoice instead of the total, which can change the tax by a cent or a yen per line; tax rules usually say which to use.
For a percentage change or difference between two prices, use the percentage calculator; to put the tax on an invoice, the invoice generator.
Japan's consumption tax
Prices shown to consumers in Japan must include tax (総額表示). Since October 2023, registered businesses issue qualified invoices that show the tax for each rate, 10% and 8%, rounded once per rate on each invoice.

Frequently asked questions
How do I take VAT out of a price?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate: at 20%, divide by 1.2 for the net price; the VAT is the difference. At Japan's 10%, the tax inside a price is one eleventh of it.
What is Japan's 8% rate for?
The reduced 8% rate applies to food and non-alcoholic drinks (not eating in at restaurants) and to newspapers delivered on subscription; most other goods and services are taxed at 10%.
Which rate applies to my product?
Each country decides which goods get reduced rates, and rates change. Check with your tax authority before invoicing.
