Tournament Bracket Maker

Make a single or double elimination bracket for up to 64 players or teams, with seeding or a random draw and byes for the top seeds, then click winners through, print it, or show it full screen.

Tournament Bracket Maker: The bracket is the next power of two up from the number of entrants, with seeds placed the standard way so the top two can only meet in the final: 1 plays 8, 4 plays 5, 2 plays 7, and 3 plays 6 in a bracket of eight. Missing places become byes, which fall to the top seeds. In double elimination, first-round losers start the losers' bracket and the losers of each later round drop into it; the winners' and losers' champions meet in the grand final, and if the losers' champion wins, both have lost once, so a reset final decides it. Single or double elimination

Single elimination is quick: n − 1 matches for n entrants, and one bad game ends a run. Double elimination takes about twice as many matches but is fairer, because nobody goes out after a single loss, which is why it is popular for esports, table tennis, and pool.

If every team should play every other, use the round robin generator instead, or a round robin in groups followed by a knockout bracket for the top teams.

Running the day

Show the bracket full screen on a television or projector so players can see who is next, and print a copy for the scorer's table. To split players into fair teams first, use the team generator.

How to use it

  1. Type the players or teams, best seed first, or press Random draw.
  2. Choose single or double elimination.
  3. Click the winner of each match to move them on; print the bracket or show it full screen.

Frequently asked questions

How are byes decided?

When the number of entrants is not a power of two, the bracket is filled to the next one, 8, 16, 32, or 64, and the empty places are byes. Because the empty places are the lowest seeds, the byes go to the highest seeds, who go straight through to round two.

What is double elimination?

A player is knocked out only after losing twice. After a first loss they move to the losers' bracket and can still win the tournament by winning every match from there, including two in the grand final if needed.

How do I seed the bracket?

Put the strongest player or team first, then the next, and so on. Seeding keeps the strongest apart until the late rounds. If there is no ranking, press Random draw to shuffle the list.

Can I undo a result?

Click the winner again to clear it, or click the other name to change it. Later rounds update automatically, and results that no longer apply are dropped.
