Click, tap or Enter on a tile beside the gap. Arrows move the gap in the chosen direction; swiping does the same. All shuffles pass the solvability parity check. Your image stays in this browser and is fitted to a square.

Solvability parity

Odd-width boards require an even inversion count. On even-width boards, inversions plus the blank row counted from the bottom must be odd. Princeton teaching material: https://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/fall17/cos226/assignments/8puzzle/index.html

Controls and records

Frequently asked questions

Are all shuffles solvable?

Yes. The shuffle checks inversion parity and the gap row where needed, and corrects an impossible permutation before play starts.

Can I use my own photo?

Yes. Choose an image file that your browser can display. It is fitted into a square and divided into tiles locally. It is not uploaded or saved between page visits.
