Seating Chart Generator (Random Classroom Seating)

Make a classroom seating chart: paste the class list, choose rows of desks or group tables, seat everyone at random while keeping chosen pairs apart, swap seats by tapping, and print.

Seating Chart Generator (Random Classroom Seating): Names are shuffled into the seats, and spare seats are left empty. For each pair to keep apart, the tool reshuffles until no pair sits side by side in a row or at the same table, trying up to 2,000 times before telling you the layout is too tight. Tapping one seat and then another swaps them, so you can fine-tune by hand. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

0 students, 24 seats
Front of the room

Tap one seat and then another to swap them. Pairs to keep apart will not sit side by side in a row or at the same table when the layout allows it. The class list is saved only in this browser.

Planning a seating plan

Random seating mixes friendship groups and gives everyone a fresh start; many teachers reshuffle every half term. Keep-apart pairs handle the students who distract each other, and a manual swap afterwards puts a student who needs to see the board near the front.

To split the class into teams instead, use the random team generator; to pick a student at random, spin the wheel.

Rows or tables

Rows suit tests and teacher-led lessons, with everyone facing the front; group tables of four to six suit discussion and projects. Switching the layout clears the chart, so print the old one first if you want to keep it.

The timetable maker prints the week's lessons to go with it.

How to use it

  1. Paste the students' names, one per line, and any pairs to keep apart.
  2. Choose rows of desks or group tables, and how many.
  3. Seat the class, swap any two seats by tapping them, and print the chart.

Privacy & limitations

The class list stays in your browser; it is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep certain students apart?

Yes: list each pair on its own line, such as Ana, Ben. They will not sit next to each other in a row or at the same table if the layout allows it.

What counts as next to each other?

Desks side by side in the same row, or any two seats at the same group table. Desks one behind the other are not counted.

Will the chart be there tomorrow?

Yes, in the same browser on the same device; print it or take a screenshot to share it.
