Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo without uploading it: people are found automatically, and any other object is selected with a click. Save a transparent PNG, or put the subject on a colour or a blurred copy of the original.

Background Remover: TOEA runs two MediaPipe segmentation models in your browser: a people model that marks every pixel belonging to a person, and an interactive model that selects the object under each click. Clicks are combined, the mask is stretched to the full picture, the edge curve and feather are applied, and the result is composited and encoded on your device. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Photos that cut out cleanly

The models decide from colour and shape, so contrast does most of the work. A subject that stands clear of a plain, differently coloured background comes out with a crisp edge; a dark coat against a dark sofa, a white cup on a white table, or a person half in shadow leaves gaps or keeps a halo. Flyaway hair, fur, glass, and lace are the weakest parts, because the masks are worked out on a reduced copy and stretched back up.

If the edge shows a thin rim of the old background, raise the threshold a few points; if the edge eats into the subject, lower it. A feather of one to three pixels hides stair-stepping without making the outline look blurred.

Transparent PNG or a solid background

Keep the transparent PNG when the cut-out is going somewhere else: a slide, a product listing, a design, or a sticker made with the sticker maker. JPG has no transparency, so a transparent area saved as JPG turns black or white depending on the program; that is why JPG is only offered once a colour or blurred background is chosen.

A marketplace that asks for a white background wants pure #ffffff behind the product, which the solid colour option gives exactly. For a head shot, the profile picture maker takes the transparent PNG straight in, and ID photos have their own size rules in the passport photo maker.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo.
  2. For a person, the cut-out appears on its own; for anything else, switch to click to select and click the subject, adding clicks for parts it missed.
  3. Adjust the threshold, softness, and feather, pick transparent, a colour, or a blurred background, and save a PNG or JPG.

Privacy & limitations

The photo never leaves your device. The first cut-out downloads the vision runtime and the model from public CDNs, about 12 MB for people and 6 MB more for click to select; after that everything runs locally.

Frequently asked questions

Which mode should I use?

Person, when the subject is one or more people: it needs no clicks. Click to select for pets, products, cars, furniture, or a single person in a group. The people model only knows people, so on anything else it keeps nothing or the wrong thing.

Why are hair and fine edges rough?

Both models look at a reduced copy of the picture, a few hundred pixels across, and the mask is stretched back up to full size. Flyaway hair, fur, lace, glass, and smoke come out smoothed or clipped. A plain background with good contrast behind the subject gives the cleanest edge; softness and feather hide what is left.

A click selected too much or too little.

Add another click on the missing part to include it. Switch to Remove, or hold Shift while clicking, and click the part that should go. Low contrast between subject and background is the usual cause; raise or lower the threshold to move the edge.

Is the saved file full resolution?

Yes, up to 12 megapixels; larger photos are scaled down to that when opened, and the page says so. The preview is drawn smaller for speed. Transparent results are PNG, since JPG cannot store transparency; JPG is offered once a colour or blurred background is chosen.

What does trim do?

It crops the transparent PNG to the subject plus a small margin, which is what you want for a sticker, a logo, or a product shot to place elsewhere.
