LaTeX Table Generator: Spreadsheet or CSV to LaTeX

Paste a table from a spreadsheet or type CSV and get LaTeX code for a table with a tabular environment, column alignment, booktabs or ruled style, a header row, a caption, and a label, with special characters escaped.

LaTeX Table Generator: Spreadsheet or CSV to LaTeX: Each row becomes a line of cells joined by & and ended with \\. Characters with a special meaning in LaTeX, such as &, %, $, #, and _, are escaped, so “Tea & cake” becomes Tea \& cake. The booktabs style adds \toprule, \midrule after the header, and \bottomrule. LaTeX

\begin{table}[htbp]
  \centering
  \caption{Prices}
  \label{tab:prices}
  \begin{tabular}{lrr}
    \toprule
    Item & Price & Quantity \\
    \midrule
    Tea \& cake & 4.50 & 2 \\
    Coffee & 3.20 & 1 \\
    \bottomrule
  \end{tabular}
\end{table}

Add \usepackage{booktabs} to your preamble.

Each row becomes a line of a tabular environment, with cells joined by & and rows ended by \\. Characters that LaTeX treats specially, such as &, %, $, #, and _, are escaped. The booktabs style uses \toprule, \midrule, and \bottomrule and no vertical lines, as most journals prefer; without it, the table gets vertical lines and \hline.

Placing the table

[htbp] lets LaTeX place the table here, at the top or bottom of a page, or on a page of floats; refer to it with \ref{tab:prices} using the label.

Markdown instead

For README files and wikis, the Markdown table generator makes pipe tables.

How to use it

  1. Paste cells from a spreadsheet, or type CSV.
  2. Set the column alignment, caption, label, and style.
  3. Copy the LaTeX into your document.

Frequently asked questions

What is booktabs?

A LaTeX package for well-spaced tables with horizontal rules of different weights and no vertical lines, the style most journals use; load it with \usepackage{booktabs}.

How do I align numbers on the decimal point?

Use the siunitx package's S column type in place of r; this generator writes l, c, and r columns.

Can I paste from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes: copied cells arrive separated by tabs, which the generator detects.
