When to flatten

Flatten a form once it is complete and about to leave your hands: a signed agreement, a submitted application, a filled invoice template. The answers then stay as they were typed, whoever opens the file and whatever viewer they use. Some mobile viewers, print services, and document pipelines ignore form fields and show them blank, and flattened values survive those too. Keep an unflattened copy if you might need to change an answer later, because the fields cannot be restored.

Forms this cannot help with

A digital signature covers the exact bytes of the file, and flattening rewrites the whole file, so a signature applied before flattening will show as invalid. Flatten before signing, not after. Forms built with Adobe's older XFA technology are not standard form fields and are not affected; the tool reports how many fields it found, and zero on a form with visible boxes means either an XFA form or boxes that are only printed lines.

Answers typed in scripts such as Chinese or Arabic may fail to flatten, since the replacement appearance is drawn with a basic Western font.

How to use it

  1. Upload an interactive PDF containing form fields.
  2. Click Flatten & Download PDF.
  3. Save the read-only flattened PDF file.

Frequently asked questions

Can flattened form fields be edited again?

No, flattening converts active form fields into permanent page vectors/text so they cannot be edited.
