The icon files a site needs

Browsers use a 32 × 32 icon for tabs and bookmarks, iPhones and iPads use a 180 × 180 icon for home-screen shortcuts, and installable web apps list 192 × 192 and 512 × 512 icons in their manifest. Link the first two from the page head with <link rel="icon" href="/favicon-32.png" sizes="32x32"> and <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">.

Google shows a site's favicon in search results and asks for a square icon whose size is a multiple of 48 pixels, so a 48, 96, or 144 pixel version is worth linking too.

Designing for 16 pixels

A favicon is often shown at 16 × 16, where text, thin lines, and fine detail disappear. Use a single letter or the simplest form of the logo, with strong contrast. iOS shows the transparent parts of a home-screen icon as black, so give the 180-pixel version a solid background.

For a complete package, including a multi-size .ico file and a web app manifest, use the favicon converter; for iPhone, iPad, and Android app icons, the app icon generator.

How to use it

  1. Choose a square or rectangular source image.
  2. Select a standard icon size.
  3. Generate and download the fitted PNG.

Privacy & limitations

Icon generation stays in your browser. The tool creates PNG assets rather than a multi-resolution ICO container.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should I use?

32×32 is a common browser favicon; 180×180 is used by Apple touch icons; 512×512 is useful for app manifests.

Will a rectangular logo be stretched?

No. It is centered and fitted without changing its aspect ratio.
