HEX, RGB, and HSL

HEX and RGB describe the same thing: the amount of red, green, and blue from 0 to 255, written in hexadecimal or in decimal. HSL describes a colour as hue, saturation, and lightness, which is easier to adjust by hand: to make a lighter or darker version of a brand colour, change only the L value. The tint generator does that in even steps.

Checking a colour in use

These values are sRGB, the colour space of the web and most screens. Wide-gamut displays can show more saturated colours through CSS functions such as color(display-p3 …) and oklch(), which have no exact HEX equivalent.

Before using a colour for text, check it against its background with the contrast checker; to take a colour from an image, use the image colour picker.
