Word Frequency Counter
Count how often each word or two- and three-word phrase appears in a text, with its share of the total (keyword density), common words left out, and a CSV download.
Word Frequency Counter: Words are split the way the browser's own word segmenter does it for the chosen language, which also handles languages written without spaces, such as Japanese. Each word or phrase is counted without regard to capitals, and its share is its count divided by all the terms counted. Common words such as the, and, and of are left out by default, using a short list for each of seven languages, so the words that carry the text's meaning come to the top. Uses
Writers use word frequencies to catch pet words repeated too often; students use them to check that an essay covers its key terms; SEO editors compare a page's top terms with what people search for. Language learners can paste a text to find the words worth learning first.
For the total count and reading time, use the word counter; to change a word throughout, find and replace.
Zipf's law
In almost any long text, the most frequent word appears about twice as often as the second, three times as often as the third, and so on. Turn off the common-word filter on a long article and the pattern shows in the table.
How to use it
- Paste your text.
- Choose single words or phrases, and the text's language for the list of common words.
- Read the most frequent terms, or download the full table as CSV.
