Test Grade Calculator

Turn questions wrong or points earned into a percentage and a letter grade, and print a grading chart with the score for every number of mistakes.

Test Grade Calculator: The score is the share of questions answered correctly, shown to one decimal. The letter follows the chosen scale, judged on the score as shown, so 89.96% displayed as 90.0% earns an A. The chart lists the score and grade for every number of wrong answers, from none to all of them. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Percentages, letters, and rounding

A test score is the questions right divided by the total. Each question on a 20-question test is worth 5 percentage points, on a 25-question test 4, and on a 30-question test about 3.3, which is why one mistake costs more on a short test. The chart makes that visible: every row is one more wrong answer.

Grades are decided on the score as it is shown. Rounding to one decimal before comparing means a score displayed as 90.0% is never marked a B; where a school rounds differently, for example to whole numbers, set the chart beside its own rule.

Scales differ between schools

The scale used most often in the United States puts the cut-offs at 90, 80, 70, and 60; the plus and minus version splits each ten-point band into the top 3, the middle 4, and the bottom 3 points. Many schools and courses use other cut-offs, and countries outside the US mostly grade on scales of their own, so the percentage is the figure to keep.

For an average across courses, weighted by credits, use the GPA calculator; for any other share or percentage change, the percentage calculator.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of questions and how many were wrong, or the points earned out of the total.
  2. Choose a letter scale, with or without plus and minus, or percentages only.
  3. Read the score, or print the chart to mark a whole class.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a test percentage?

Divide the questions right by the total and multiply by 100. With 20 questions and 3 wrong, 17 are right: 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%.

What letter grade is 85%?

A B on the common scale where 90 and above is an A, 80 a B, 70 a C, 60 a D, and below 60 an F; on the plus and minus scale it is a B (83 to 86). Schools set their own cut-offs, so check the one your school uses.

Can questions be worth different points?

Yes: switch to points and enter the points earned and the total. The chart needs every question to be worth the same, so it is shown for questions wrong only.

How do I print the chart?

Choose Print the chart. It lists every number of mistakes with its score, so papers can be marked without working out each one.
